Annual, biennial, and quadrennial reports, and reports of progress : state publication, 1850-1966.

These reports function to document the activities of the Geological Survey of Alabama. Major topics included are: geological explorations, natural history, fossils, minerals, mining of coal and other minerals, natural resources, and the geological structure of the state. Numerous diagrams, maps, statistics, and tables are included. Publications released by the Geological Survey during the period covered are usually listed in these reports, and a financial statement is also included. The first report, issued in 1850, was a biennial report. It covered the 1847-1849 period. Michael Tuomey issued the first report. This was followed by a second biennial report, issued in 1858. It covered the period 1854-1856. This report, begun by Tuomey, was completed by J.W. Mallet. No reports were then issued until 1873. In that year Eugene A. Smith issued an annual report. Annual reports continued through 1876. Biennial reports were then issued from 1878-1898, except for one quadrennial report for the 1884-1888 era. From 1906-1942 quadrennial reports were issued, and thenceforth annual reports have been issued. From 1944 forward the annual reports of the Oil and Gas Board are also included. Indexes are available in the Indexes and Lists of Publications series.
